BUILDING CLEAN LATRINES AND WATER WELLS IN WEST TIMOR
Access to clean, protected water wells is necessary for household water use. These sources also provide water for crops and animal use. Unprotected water walls lead to contamination and contaminated water sources are the leading cause of digestive problems, skin disease and a contributor to malnutrition in West Timor, Indonesia.
Water Contamination Story
Local girl, Ani Ataupah, fills up multiple water containers from a well 2 hours from her village. She comes with three other girls and two women who usually make the trip twice a day, once in the morning and once in the evening. This well is both unprotected and contaminated which will cause digestive issues and skin disease.
New Water Well for the Nomuke Community, 2017
CWS facilitated the protection of the Nomuke well by providing wire, nails, rope, a pulley system, portland cement, and a roof. The molds to make the cement rings for the well were borrowed from the local church. Construction began in August 2017 and was completed in November 2017.
Mr. Marthen Luther Boimau is the headmaster of Bestobe School in Nomuke village. His school manages the protected water well along with local community members. His school is currently building an additional building to house more school children.
Solidaritas, a disaster planning project, declared that the school grounds would be the meeting point along the evacuation route, during flood season.
